Caroline Goodwin, AnaCaroline Goodwin is a rising senior studying with Patricia Havranek at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. Ana y su sombra is Caroline's fourth production with ROK. She is thrilled to be a part of this innovative production that has allowed her and the ROK team to share their art form even amidst a pandemic. Caroline's past ROK roles are Ami in Dominick DiOrio’s The World is One, Unicorn in Lauren Bernofsky’s Mooch the Magnificent, and Rosie in The Lunchbox Project. She was last seen on the proscenium stage in the chorus of IU Opera Theatre’s Bernstein’s Mass. Other favorite roles include Maria in West Side Story, Liesl in The Sound of Music, Mrs. Mayor in Seussical the Musical, and Lou Ann in Hairspray.

Kate Johnson, AnaKate Johnson, soprano, is pursuing her Master of Music degree in Voice at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music under the tutelage of Professor Heidi Grant Murphy. She is an Apprentice Artist with Des Moines Metro Opera in their current 2020 Virtual Summer Festival. Kate is a two-time recipient of the Opera Omaha Guild Award at the Nebraska District Metropolitan Opera National Council (MONC) Auditions and received the Encouragement Award at the 2020 Iowa District MONC Auditions. Kate performed Susanna in IU Opera Theater's 2019 production of Le Nozze di Figaro. As an undergraduate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Kate performed Beth in Little Women, Susanna in an English touring production of The Marriage of Figaro that reached rural and young Nebraska audiences, and Zerlina in Don Giovanni. Kate has energetically performed the title role in Mooch the Magnificent with Reimagining Opera for Kids (ROK), and is delighted to sing Ana in ROK's virtual production of Ana y Su Sombra. She is a dog lover, loves salsa and bachata dancing, and has taken up creating personalized thank-you cards using watercolors.

Sarah Rauch, SombraMezzo-soprano Sarah Rauch is excited to be performing for a second year with ROK, and was seen last year as Orlando in Lauren Bernofsky’s Mooch the Magnificent. A recent graduate of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, she earned her BM in voice performance under the guidance of Dr. Katherine Jolly and Wolfgang Brendel. Most recently, she has been seen as Second Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute with Bloomington Chamber Opera and Isolier in Rossini’s Le Comte Ory with Chicago Summer Opera, as well as the chorus of IU Opera Theater’s productions of Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmèlites and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. As of Fall 2020, she is a resident of New York’s Hudson Valley, where she is pursuing her master’s degree at Bard College Conservatory’s Vocal Arts Program studying with Richard Cox

Olivia Newcomb, AsombroIn her second season with ROK, Olivia Newcomb is excited to be performing as Asombro in Ana y Su Sombra. A rising senior at the Jacobs School of Music, Olivia is pursuing a BSOF in vocal performance and musical theatre. At IU, her performance credits include Orlando Spinks/Unicorn for ROK, and for Indiana University Theatre, Annie in Sticks and Stones: a new musical and Mrs. Wade in Wonderful Town. Other notable performances include Natalie in the world premiere of Bridesmaids: a new opera for the Vienna Summer Music Festival, and for the Bowe Theatre Katarina Minola in The Taming of the Shrew and Rizzo in Grease. Olivia is excited to be performing with this talented cast and would like to thank the production team for their guidance and support in tackling the challenges of a Zoom production!

Isabella Busch, YeyaIsabella is a Seventh Grader at St. Charles School in Bloomington, IN who studies singing, ballet, and piano in the Jacobs School of Music's Precollege Program.
Her credits include an Honorable Mention in the Sonatina Category of the 2019 Young Hoosiers Piano Competition Finals at the Indiana State Fair and more than a dozen piano recitals. She has had numerous performances with the IU Children’s Choir and sang as the Child Soloist in the 2019 Jacobs School production of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. For six years, she danced in the annual Jacobs School production of The Nutcracker, including the role of Clara in 2018 and 2019. As well as singing at St. Charles Church services, Isabella enjoys composing and performing original and covered pop songs with her siblings, aka the Quarry Kids. An avid reader, Isabella was her school’s Spelling Bee champ in 2020. Isabella is looking very forward indeed to the reopening of school and sharing some quality time with her friends again. |
Erin Erickson, YeyaErin Erickson, from Columbus, Indiana, is a soprano studying vocal performance at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. She joined ROK in 2019, appearing as Mooch in Mooch the Magnificent. In 2018-2019, she was a member of IU’s grammy-nominated Singing Hoosiers choir. A Hutton Honors College student, she is under the tutelage of Alice Hopper and completed her freshman joint recital with Hopper. In 2019-2020, she was part of the All Campus Choir, performing the featured solo in Falstaff and the Fairies at the fall concert. She then joined the University Chorale for the spring. Prior to coming to IU, she studied with Jacobs School alumnae Sarah Kittle (2014-2018) and Janie Gordon (2018); and alumna and professor, Jane Dutton (2018). In high school, Erickson was a part of the Columbus East High School music program, appearing in various drama productions, including as Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast, as well as the Center Stage show choir. She was awarded best soloist at a regional show choir competition. Erickson is excited to return to ROK for Ana y Su Sombra.

Annaka Grismer, YeyaSoprano Annaka Grismer graduated in 2019 from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where she studied Vocal Performance with minors in Linguistics and Spanish. She has performed scenes from Le nozze di Figaro (Countess), Arabella (Zdenka), and Die Fledermaus (Rosalinde), among others. Also an aspiring arts and nonprofit administrator, she is a co-founder of Bloomington Chamber Opera, which presented its first production in March. As an administrator, Annaka is passionate about fostering cultures of respect, equity, and innovation. In the fall, she will continue her studies at IU as a MAAA-MPA candidate in the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Ben Rardin, PeteBen Rardin received his Bachelor of Music degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and his Master of Music degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Ben works as a firefighter / EMT when he is not performing for ROK. Ben is also musical director for the podcast Flashback to Never.

Thomas King, RobleThomas King, tenor, has sung roles in over 40 operas, operettas and musicals in the last 53 years. Highlights were creating roles in three world premiere operas, written especially for him, and having the pleasure of performing the Witch in Hansel and Gretel over 100 times. He is a retired voice professor and continues to love singing at the age of 74. He also enjoys sharing opera with new audiences, one of the philosophies of ROK.

Eric Bowling, fluteEric Bowling is a private flute instructor and flutist based in the Bloomington area. After graduating from the IU Jacobs School of Music, he taught as adjunct faculty at Vincennes University & Kentucky Wesleyan College. Eric is currently principal flute of the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and works for IU full-time in student records while maintaining his teaching studio.

Kimberly Carballo, pianoFounder and director of Reimagining Opera for Kids (ROK), Kimberly is Coordinating Opera Coach for Indiana University’s (IU) Opera and Ballet Theater, and an active international performer and educator. She has previously worked as the mainstage and young artists’ program coach for the Compañía Lírica Nacional de Costa Rica, and music theory instructor and vocal coach at the Conservatorio Musical de Alajuela, the Escuela de Artes Musicales de la Universidad de Costa Rica, and the Universidad Nacional in Costa Rica. In addition to her duties at IU, she maintains a private studio as a freelance coach, collaborator, and piano teacher. Kimberly also forms part of the inaugural and ongoing team for Tunaweza Kimuziki (Through Music All is Possible), a project promoting exchange among music educators, scholars, and performers in Kenya and the USA.

Rebecca Luppe, pianoOriginally from Kalamazoo, MI, Rebecca Luppe graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and High Honors from Vanderbilt University, where she majored in piano performance and minored in religious studies. This past May, she completed her Master’s degree in solo piano at Indiana University.
Rebecca loves collaborative music-making, and has attended summer collaborative programs as a full fellowship participant, including Prague Summer Nights opera festival in 2018 and Musiktheater Bavaria in 2019. This fall, she will return to IU to earn her Performer’s Diploma in vocal piano with a full scholarship and graduate assistant award. She has participated in ROK for two years, and recently helped record the 2020-21 Season performance. It has been one of the greatest joys of her time at IU! In her spare time, she loves to sing and play folk music with her band, read books from various religious traditions, and hike in Indiana and Michigan’s beautiful state forests. |
Lauren Bernofsky, violinLauren Bernofsky is a composer, conductor, and violinist. Her music has been performed across the United States as well as internationally in major venues from Carnegie Hall to Grieg Hall in Bergen, Norway. Her works are published by The FJH Music Company, Hal Leonard, Grand Mesa, Balquhidder Music, Fatrock Ink, Carl Fischer, Theodore Presser, Alfred Publishing, and Boosey & Hawkes. She holds degrees from the Hartt School, New England Conservatory, and Boston University, where she earned a doctorate in composition. Her music can be heard on the Polarfonia, Emeritus, Music to My Ears, MSR Classics, Blue Griffin, Summit, and Albany labels.
She has taught at Boston University, the University of Maryland Baltimore County, The Peabody Institute, and Interlochen. She conducts at regional festivals and serves as a clinician at schools, festivals, and national conferences. Lauren has been involved with ROK for a number of years, not just as a violinist but also as a composer; she was commissioned by ROK to write two operas, MOOCH THE MAGNIFICENT and RUFUS AND RITA, both of which are available from Theodore Presser. www.laurenbernofsky.com |
